Kiran Bedi - First Indian Women in UN

DR. KIRAN BEDI, 'the first' in many ventures needs no introduction. The latest edition of her book- “I DARE” covers all the details of her work and her contributions to society. Whats more? She has just returned from her latest stint at the United Nations as a Security Advisor for Peace mission, being the first woman to take on this mantle. She is coming home to 'amche Pune' for the first time since her return from the UN. A close associate of the foundation, she shares her experience with us….
We know her as the first and highest ranking Indian woman Of Indian Police Services. She has been an inspiration for many women who dare! Every time her Herculean achievements throw light on different facets of the gem, the persona of Dr. Kiran Bedi. Our iron lady is back after completing a two year assignment for The United Nations. She served as Civilian Police Adviser in the department of peacekeeping operations. The UN is the only democratic, universal organization that focuses on global issues such as political, economic, social, environmental or demographic. It has 191 member nations including India.

Giving details of her assignment Dr. Bedi says, “I had to provide preparation of the UN in all aspects of police reform and inputs for restructuring the police in countries the UN decided to go to, to prevent escalation of internal hostility. In 2004 we provided plans, assessments, experts, management, supervision and training 6000 police officers posted in Afghanistan, Congo, Cyprus, East Timor, Kosava, Sierra Leone, West Sahara and other places, some very dangerous at the moment.”
“It was truly an internal policing assignment, all with different timelines as we were dealing with different countries. We were also under constant international scrutiny. As a police division we reported to all member states.”
The 53 year old IPS officer, who joined the Delhi Police in 1972, felt that the achievement was not only a personal honor for her but also for the entire police fraternity in the country in general and her parent force in particular.
