To speak of the genesis of Lila Poonawalla Foundation would mean tracing its conception to 1994 when the seed was sown. The indelible day was 16th September. The country was Switzerland. The city was Lausanne. The house was Territet. The occasion was the celebration of Lila Firoz Poonawalla's 50th Birthday. Dr. Gad Rausing and his charming wife Dr. Brigit Rausing had invited a few corporate friends of Lila.
 At the end of the celebration Lila received a gift from The Rausing Family. They gifted her a corpus fund that evening to start this Foundation. Generosity was the keystone not only in the minds of Bibs and Gad but also in Lila and Firoz's thoughts. Due to impromptu decision of Lila, overridden by an emotional inclination, the precious birthday gift assumed the edifice of an education foundation rather than an exquisite artifact of a piece of expensive jewellery. Thus Rausing Family's gift brought the magic synergy that formed the seed, which later on germinated into a sapling in the form of Lila Poonawalla Foundation.
